We are a community of Christian homeschool families with a vision to train up our children for God’s glory. We come from a variety of churches with a common statement of faith. As members of the CHARIS Homeschool Support Group, families may opt to register for co-op activities and engage in fun, hands-on learning enrichment activities for grades Pre-K - 12 that are operated by the parents on a volunteer basis.
Participation in a CHARIS homeschool co-op is one of the privileges of CHARIS Membership. We welcome new members to the support group any time of year. Information and a link to the registration form can be found on our home page.
It simply hasn't been possible to plan our usual co-op, so we have prayerfully decided to take a fresh approach to group learning this fall. Rather than a central organizer, CHARIS will serve as a hub for homegrown, member-led group learning opportunities.
Whatever CHARIS members choose! For instance, members who are teaching their child from a particular curriculum may choose to invite others to join and make it a group academic effort (with some friendship-building opportunities as a bonus!). Members can use our private Facebook page to offer opportunities or make inquiries. We have a wide range of interests and giftings, so a lot of potential. There is also a lot of flexibility in where, when, and how little groups decide to meet.
There are two steps:
1) If you are not already a current member of CHARIS, join by completing your registration on the CHARIS website: https://mycharis.org/
2) Once you are registered as a CHARIS Member, you will then be invited to our private Facebook group, where members will be posting their plans for classes, activities, and events. You may want to start your own!
Because we aren't having a centrally-run co-op this fall, there will not be the usual flat fee to cover those costs. Any expenses (such as for supplies or curriculum) will be determined by the members who plan a class or activity. If one member takes on the responsibility of teaching an entire class, it is at her discretion whether to request a tuition fee.
CHARIS moms and dads, and even graduates, can share their skills and interests through teaching. At our traditional co-op, parents are required to participate in some capacity, either by volunteering to be part of a class teaching team or assisting in various other ways (administrative, etc.). Since our members will plan their own classes and activities this fall, it will be left up to their discretion.
In past years, there have been a wide variety of classes and enrichment activities offered, from science, math, social studies, gym, literature, writing, photography, arts and crafts, cooking, music, gym, government, and foreign language, to name a few. Parents’ ideas are encouraged and classes are based on what families volunteer to do or what they had already planned to do with their own kids.
CHARIS co-ops have never functioned as drop-off co-ops. The teamwork of our families is what makes the co-op work so well, and the connection with other parents is a blessing. However, our members will plan their own classes and activities for the fall of 2020, and this will be left to their discretion.
Yes, we encourage participation by students in the upper grades, as we value homeschooling through the high school level.
Yes, grandparents or relatives are welcome to participate. We just ask that they volunteer wherever possible in order to help in the functioning of the group.
